Petra

Petra is one of the new wonders of the world. It is an archaeological site in the Arabah, Ma'an Governorate, Jordan. Petra lies about 3-5 hours south of modern Amman, about 2 hours north of Aqaba, on the edges of the mountainous desert of the Wadi Araba. It is renowned for its rock-cut architecture. The city is surrounded by towering hills of rust-colored sandstone which gave the city some natural protection against invader. The Nabateans constructed it as their capital city around 100 BCE.

Petra is sometimes called the ‘Lost City’. In spite of its being such an important city in antiquity, after the 14th century AD, Petra was completely lost to the western world. It was rediscovered in 1812 by the Swiss traveler, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, who tricked his way into the fiercely guarded site by pretending to be an Arab from India wishing to make a sacrifice at the tomb of the Prophet Aaro
